¡Feliz Cumpleaños James!

Erin Says:

Well when we returned to San Juan Del Sur we decided we better throw a little birthday celebration for James. (Especially since we know it´s our last couple nights with him). Fittingly, Yaela and Natalie were still in town and the five of us were back together again last night. For some reason, we thought it was absolutely necessary to have a piñata and a birthday cake - a very adult birthday party. The funny part about this was that San Juan del Sur is a slightly larger than normal, but still small Nicaraguan town. There is no bakery in the town that sells cakes of any sort. Luckily for us, our super cute hostel owner sent us on a goose chase into a shanty part of down to the house of ¨Familia Granja¨. He gave us basic directions and said when we got close just to ask for the family - and sure enough everyone knew who they were. We made our way into a little ally to a few shack-like houses until we came upon one with an open door and the table covered in cakes. (seemed a little out of place). After trying to communicate with the old lady in our totally broken spanish we left having no idea at all what the cake was going to end up like. Lucky for us, turned out pretty nice, her making us a gigantic cake that actually said Happy Birthday James on it. The walk back with it was pretty comical as everybody on the street started singing Feliz Cumpleaños to us.

When we all met up in the evening,
we loaded up the piñata and cake.... and some Flor de Caña (obviously) and headed to the beach. As James blew out all his candles we sang Feliz Cumpleaños in a bad combination of Spanish and English - and then Nat and the other dutch folk sang to him in dutch to top it all off! After drinking and eating the entire cake......which was quite an accomplishment, it was time for James to go to town on his piñata, which we filled with cheap Nicaraguan candy. It took him a few swings but he definitely smashed that pink elephant apart!
Oddly, afterwards James started frantically trying to fill his pockets with all the candy. He seemed to be taking it all pretty seriously, ha ha ha. Anyway, after all that we headed up to the bar for some pizza, drinks and dancing and it turned out to be a pretty good night for everyone.
¡Feliz Cumpleaños James!
